Climate-Controlled Storage Between Homes

The gap between selling a property and taking possession of the next is one of the most common reasons furniture and belongings need temporary placement. Renovation creates a similar need, since dust, paint fumes, or floor sanding often mean the whole home must be cleared for the work to proceed.

Those relocating abroad for a period sometimes choose to keep their home rather than give it up, moving part of the furniture into secure storage until they return. Preparing a property for sale, through staging, is another common reason personal belongings are moved out temporarily.

Wood furniture, canvas, and leather are particularly sensitive to swings in temperature and humidity: dry air can crack veneer, while dampness invites mould and warping. Left in an uncontrolled space for months, these effects can cause damage that is difficult or impossible to reverse afterwards.

For musical instruments, artwork, and wine, stable temperature and humidity within a narrow range is not a comfort feature but a basic requirement. Climate-controlled storage provides exactly that: conditions that stay consistent year round, regardless of summer heat or winter cold outside.

A detailed, itemised inventory, ideally supported by photographs, is essential for knowing exactly what is stored and where, months later. Labelling boxes and furniture individually means a single item can be located and retrieved quickly, without disturbing everything else in storage.

A well-organised storage space is not only space-efficient but also allows orderly access: when an item is needed temporarily, it should not take hours to find among stacked boxes. It is worth arranging items at the point of loading so that anything likely to be needed sooner stays easily reachable.

The physical security of the storage facility, access control, camera monitoring, fire protection, is a basic requirement when valuable furniture and artwork are involved. It is worth clarifying in advance who can access the storage space and how entries and exits are recorded.

Insurance coverage should never be assumed: it is worth confirming what risks, fire, water damage, theft, are covered during storage, up to what value, and whether that coverage actually matches the real value of the items concerned.

A few weeks of storage during a renovation calls for different preparation than several months or a year in storage. For the short term, careful packing and covering may be enough; for longer periods, every piece of furniture should be wrapped in protective film and soft padding, with textiles sealed in airtight packaging.

Before longer storage, furniture should be thoroughly cleaned, since residual dirt can cause discolouration or damage over time. Metal fittings are best kept in a dry environment to prevent corrosion, and leather surfaces lightly conditioned before they settle in for an extended rest.
